How to generate an AI Swimlane Diagram
Step-by-step guide on generating a Swimlane Diagram
- Write a prompt describing the business or system process. The best prompts are 3–4 sentences long. Use the structure below for good results:
- List the actors involved. These will be shown as vertical columns (e.g. Customer, Sales Rep, Inventory System).
- Describe the interactions between actors as a sequence of messages. For each step, specify who sends what to whom.
- Include groupings or phases if helpful (e.g. Onboarding, Fulfillment).
- Generate a diagram with the prompt. Each actor will appear as a column, and arrows (messages) will show how work passes between them.
- Edit the diagram with follow-up prompts (requires signing in to Eraser).
- Manually adjust the layout using GUI controls (requires signing in to Eraser).
Tips on generating a Swimlane Diagram
- Instead of starting from scratch, copy from business process docs, workflow scripts, or onboarding materials.
- Ask an LLM to structure the flow as a numbered list of interactions between actors—it can save time and help catch missing steps.
